Qingpu belongs to
the tide-affected plain areas. Its rivers are affected by tides from
Huangpu River in the lower reaches and receive waters from Jiangsu
and Zhejiang provinces in the upper reaches but finally flow into
Huangpu River and then down into the sea, forming part of Huangpu
River system. The whole district owns 1,817 river courses with a
length of 2,155.07 kilometers and 21 lakes with a total area of
59.32 square kilometers. The main river courses are Taipu River,
Dazhengtang Marsh, Dingpu River, Lanlu Harbor, Wusongjiang River,
Maohe River, Youdun Harbor, etc. Most of the lakes lie in the west
part of the district among which Dingshanhu Lake, 62.0 square
kilometers in area, is the only fresh water lake of Shanghai.
