The whole district has 26 public kindergartens, 26 primary schools, 30 middle schools with 29,000 registered students, among which 1 is a complete secondary school, 5 are senior middle schools and 4 are 9-year-programmed schools, together with 2 special schools.
For the developing of senior middle schools equal stress has been laid on quantity expansion and quality improving. Qingpu Senior Middle School has expanded its school buildings by 10,000 square meters so the classes have been increased to 48, with a result of better modeling and experimental effects. The district has spent 120 million RMB yuan in the removing and rebuilding of Zhujiajiao Middle School so that the school has now 42 classes in scale and become a new boarding senior middle school. In 2003, 74.4 % of the graduating students passed the college entrance examination, among which 21.6 % passed the examination for the regular courses of key universities and 44.5 % for those of general universities. The district has made great efforts in activating elementary education and expanding the provision of more high-quality senior middle schools to satisfy the ever-growing needs of the masses for the better elementary education of their children. The district will further improve the vocational education and adult education, and timely adjust the subject planning and the course structure, and tighten the interior administration to raise the overall level of vocational and adult education.
