As an ancient folk art in Southern China, ¡°Baixiang Dance¡± was
popular in Zhonggu Area of the Qingpu District. As time flies by,
the dance is dying out. To protect, inherit and study the ¡°Baixiang
Dance¡±, the Entertainment and Sports Center of Zhonggu Town has
planned to revitalize the dance.
In the past, groups of people would dance around on temple fairs,
praying for god¡¯s blessing of a favorable weather and a comfortable
life. This dance, developed from the Song Dynasty, is called
¡°Baixiang Dance¡±. Later, it was divided into ¡°Wen Bai¡± and ¡°Wu Bai¡±.
In ¡°Wen Bai¡±, one should pray on their knees. But in ¡°Wu Bai¡±, the
pray is changed to a jumping dance, accompanied by Chinese
music.
A special research team for the ¡°Baixiang Dance¡±, organized by
the Entertainment and Sports Center, has set up archives and applied
for the dance to join Shanghai¡¯s special folk art project. Moreover,
the Center has prepared to establish a special dance troupe to turn
the dance to a regular public activity. Through practice and
innovation, the dance will be further improved.
