Thanks to urban renewal in
recent years, Zhujiajiao, a centuries-old town, is turning into a
more charming place to live. The town has, accordingly, won such
titles as the gold award of "China's 50 Most Attractive Places for
Foreigners", the "National Scenic Town", the "National Eco-friendly
Town", the "Model Residence for Chinese", and the "Time-honored
Chinese Town".
Since the beginning of the 21st century,
Zhujiajiao has give priority to protecting environment and
developing tourism for fulfilling its aim to be a time-honoured
eco-friendly town. Thus, the town, which boasts its special river
location in the South of the Yangtze River, should provide outlets
for leisure and holidays, and build ecologically intelligent
communities and residence. To do so, Zhujiajiao committed itself to
redevelop the old town for a new one. While making full use of the
natural water environment and the cultural background of the old
town, Zhujiajiao undertook the urban greening based on two levels --
greening for the whole town and the town proper -- according to the
strategic space planning for overall city development.
In 2002,
when Zhujiajiao initiated its new city construction, the green area
was very small, only 15.8 acres in total and 11.2©O per capita.
In
line with the new plan for the town proper of Zhujiajiao, Zhujiajiao
Investment Company started large-scale urban greening by investing a
lot of money for the construction. All the efforts aim to create a
resident-friendly climate for the scenic town of Zhujiajiao.
In
2003, Zhuxi Road, the first garden-like road in Shanghai, was
completed. The road, acting as a gateway to the No. 318 Highway,
shows great charm of the new town. In 2004, the greening design on
Zhuxi Road was graded as the excellent engineering in Shanghai. Year
2005 saw two large green projects on Dianshanhu Road and by the
Dadianhu Lake breaking ground. The two sites, like graceful arcs on
Dianshanhu Avenue in the northernmost side of new Zhujiajiao town,
attract many passersby to linger on. With the long bank on the clear
water and flourishing flowers and weeds, the Dadianhu Lake is
reputed to be the little West Lake for the residents of
Zhujiajiao.
Tai'an greening project (Phase I) in 2006 is a pilot
one in the greening of Zhujiajiao residence according to the
landscape ecology principle. The residential community keeps the
inner river ecosystem intact. Worth mentioning is the residential
centre's Greenland with its unique arrangement and popular
plantation in the Residents' Square, making it an ideal place for
parties and pastime.
At present, Zhujiajiao has completed 3
large-scale green places covering more than 800,000©O in total, 9
greening roads of about 330,000©O in total, and about 140,000©O
greening in the residential community and citizen center, which
equals to nearly 40©O per capita. By 2020 the greening area per
capita is expected to be 47.34©O in Zhujiajiao, covering 40-50% area
of the whole town.
