  • What procedures should be followed if an alien dies in China?
  • According to the Rules for the Implementation of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Entry and Exit of Aliens, if an alien dies in China, his/her family members or guardian or agent shall, within 3 days, report the death to the Exit-Entry Administration of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau with the death certificate and hand in the following materials:

    (1) The deceased's residence certificate or visa;

    (2) the death certificate:

    (a) A medical death certificate with an official seal, provided by hospitals at a county level or above;

    (b) death identification provided by public security administrative departments in the case of an unnatural death, or

    (c) related certificates provided by local police stations, or medical death certificates provided by community medical service centers or medical centers at villages and towns, in case of the death happening in a local region;

    (3) the procedures shall be completed and reported by the family members of the deceased; if the procedures are completed by non-family members, letters of authorization provided by the consulate-general in Shanghai or the embassy in China of the deceased must be presented.
