  • Activities Held at Qingpu Sub-venue of Shanghai Book Fair
  • With the theme of “lover reading, love life”, the 2017 Shanghai Book Fair and “China Reading” Shanghai Week was held at Shanghai Exhibition Center from August 16 to 22. The Qingxi Rostrum, a special activity project at the book fair sub-venue Qingpu District Public Library, also presented the readers with a splendid cultural feast.

The youth reading and parent-child reading were promoted through integration of all resources and cross-border cooperation.

On August 18, jointly organized by Qingpu District Science and Technology Commission, the District Science and Technology Association, the District Meteorological Bureau, the District Library and other units, the “Sowing the Meteorology Seeds in Children’s Heart” popular science reading sharing activity was held at the conference hall of the district library, with the participation of more than 250 students, teachers and parents in the district. Huang Wei, chief editor of the “Earth Children's Weather Book”, delivered a lecture on “Connection Between Weather and Art”. There are a lot of connection between weather and culture and art. For example, the art works such as the city of fog painted by Monet, the Thunder and Lightning Polka by Johann Strauss II, and the famous Hollywood masterpiece “Singin’ in the Rain” are all related to climate and weather. Contemplating the meteorological knowledge behind these works of art, we can find many interesting points which can inspire the children to explore the meteorology. The teachers at the “wisdom and courage education – experimental field of future scientists” of Tongji University brought interesting experiments to the children on the scene by inviting the children onto the stage to make the experiment of “creating clouds”. The sudden appearance of the rising “cumulus congestus” enabled the students to closely experience and feel the magic attraction of science from the perspective of physical experiment.

On August 19, jointly sponsored by Qingxi Rostrum and Wuyue Store of Xinhua Bookstore, the lecture “In Quest of Nature – I Grow with Animal Novels” was also held at the district library. Yuan Bo, a post-1990 scholar and writer and member of China Writers Association, gave an exciting lecture. Yuan’s works have won the Bing Xin Children's Literature Award 5 times. In the lecture, starting from riding an ostrich to go to school at the wildlife breeding base, Yuan told the stories about exploring the nature in his childhood, college years and the scientific research work, and his experiences made the small readers learn how to think in nature, gain knowledge in nature and feel the beauty of nature and life. Beginning with his own experiences with the wild animals, through the animal behaviors and stories that the children are the most interested in, Yuan further talked about the ways to comprehensively improve the learning ability, stimulating the children’s interest in exploring the natural sciences and humanities.

Feeling the beauty of classic and traditional culture, leading the new trends of public reading

In the long history of ancient China, there were numerous poems acclaiming and depicting jade. On August 20, Zhu Changyuan, a famous ancient jade collector in Shanghai, held a new book sharing event for the “Notebook on Jade Bracelets”, which was complied on the basis of his notes on his thoughts in his 30-plus-year collection experience. The book describes the author’s understanding of the history, culture and value of the jade bracelets, besides the related knowledge mastered by the author in researching the jade bracelets. With abundant pictures and texts, the lecture was highly informative, interesting and practical, and without feeling dull, the participants were enlightened in appreciation, selection and purchasing, wearing and inheritance of the jade bracelets. After the lecture, the readers attracted by the lecturer’s fame had their jade bracelets identified on the scene. The audience said that the lecture was vivid, interesting and informative. Exploring the jade bracelets, a part of Chinese traditional aesthetics is also a process of pursuing the culture and classics. The Qingxi Rostrum has launched the “Chinese Traditional and Classical Culture” lectures this year, which will be organized throughout the year.

The book attraction at the 2017 book fair has infiltrated into the readers and the children's heart, and a wide variety of lively and vivid reading activities are spreading the concept of “reading, sharing and exchange”. The Qingxi Rostrum is disseminating the infinite book attraction in the tangible form of reading promotion. Reading the classics is the best way for the readers to get together. Although the lectures at the Qingpu sub-venue of Shanghai Bok Fair was rounded off, the “Green Qingpu, Ideal District” with book attraction will be the longest memory in the city.
