Situated within 120<53' to 121<17' east longitude and 30<59' to 31<16' north latitude, Qingpu District lies in the west suburbs of Shanghai, lower reaches of Taihu Lake and upper reaches of Huangpu River. It adjoins Minhang District in the east, borders on Songjiang District, Jinshan District and Jiashan County of Zhejiang Province in the south, joins the two cities of Wujiang and Kunshan of Jiangsu Province in the west, and connects with Jiading District in the north.

Qingpu District comprises 9 towns of Zhujiajiao Town, Zhaoxiang Town, Xujing Town, Huaxin Town, Chonggu Town, Baihe Town, Zhaotun Town, Liantang Town and Jinze Town, and 2 sub-district offices of Xiayang and Yingpu. It covers a total area of 675.1 square kilometers, of which 112.46 square kilometers, i.e. 16.65 %, are water areas.

With smooth terrain and crisscrossed rivers the topography of the district features the boggy plain of ancient Taihu Lake Basin of Changjiang River Delta. The height of the ground elevation lies 2.8 to 4.8 meters above sea level and it goes lower in the central and south areas but higher in the north part along the banks of Wusong River and the west part of Dingshanhu Lake area. Lakes and marshes cover the southwest part of Maohe River area.

Qingpu belongs to the tide-affected plain areas. Its rivers are affected by tides from Huangpu River in the lower reaches and receive waters from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in the upper reaches but finally flow into Huangpu River and then down into the sea, forming part of Huangpu River system. The whole district owns 1,817 river courses with a length of 2,155.07 kilometers and 21 lakes with a total area of 59.32 square kilometers.
